That's a pretty impressive training week!

Also, I enjoyed watching the YouTube video of the 2-miler. I'm always beyond impressed by those elites, they're like the speed of light in human form.

Yeah, all those people strutting around like peacocks because they have mastered the elliptical machine and all those "edgy" pop tunes from the '80s piped in... man, I need to get out to run.

Nevertheless, the Malmo stuff is so simple it's genius. Gee, if you want to be a better runner, run.

Anyway, the move from the chiro to the sports doc was interesting -- it seemed to be all about getting better and stronger rather than "healing." Either way, it's off for some ice, yoga poses and my medically prescribed stretching routine.

Shouldn't we get bonus points for running? Stretching?

Damn.

Hey John,

Like the new blog! Sorry to read about your tendonitis. That sucks big-time. I have been relatively pain & injury free over the past few yrs of bike racing, but now that I've gotten back to running I realize how much more? of a toll on the body it takes than pushing those pedals.

I've been having all kindsa shin splinty-like pains as I tried to put in too many miles @ too fast a pace in April. Now I've cut back and am trying to mix cycling & running more to give my legs a rest from the pounding. I know that I'm not biomechanically gifted when it comes to running, and due to a leg-length discrepancy I have had all kinds of probs w/ my right leg. First it was knee tracking now it's more hamstring kinda soreness. I pretty much just run w/ the pain/discomfort b/c I can't stand not to exercise.

And don't get me started on back pain. Oh lordy. I feel like an old 36...

drop me an e-mail when you get the chance. ezbhj@yahoo.com

Glad you escaped the knife John, and I love that "Summer of Malmo" page.

Stretching? Really? At 36 I'm starting to do it too. That "Brain Training for Runners" by Matt Fitzgerald has some good stretching and strength routines. Maybe you could read it while on the recumbent bike at the gym.

On second thought... Bike and gym? That sounds like hell.

Jeez, singe digits! I'm proud of you John. Seriously though, I am with you on the doubles. It does take some time to acclimate though, and my second runs have actually gotten slower the more I get into a program.

Good to have you back, even if it's only every few weeks.

I'm definitely bummed and I'm looking to bounce back quickly, but I'll just take that as it comes. However, if it takes more than three weeks to get my legs back, I'm going to move on and focus on the fall. I think I'm heading in the right direction...

Anyway, my tactical error was not going out harder from the start. With more than 24 hours of thinking about it, I realize that 6:00-6:10 miles were too easy. I didn't labor or feel uncomfortable at all... not even in the slightest.

My worry, though, was the cramps in my hamstrings and calves, which never relented. I wasn't sure what 5:40-5:50 pace would have done during the race and I guess at the time I didn't think it would have been good.

Sigh.

I'm pretty banged up now, but it seems as if it's just soreness and not anything serious. I'm definitely tired too based on the fact that my resting heart rate jumped to 56 this morning... it felt like it was going to burst out of my chest. In the meantime, I'll do some jogging with my wife and take a few junk food days and get some chiro/ART and get back out there.

For now it's time for more ice...

I was thinking about you today during our paltry 10K here in Tucson. Glad you stayed tough but I'm sorry you didn't get the desired result after a hell of a lot of tough training. You might be ready for another one sooner rather than later if you feel you overplayed the mileage and under-did the speed, as that's something you can keep building from (once you're injury-free and recovered of course).
